The Univox Uni-Fuzz is a unique and innovative fuzz pedal with a rich history and distinctive features. The pedal was designed by engineer Fumio Mieda and contains 53 parts, making it one of the most heavily engineered examples of the craft. It offers a built-in 1KHz mid cut, with notes of octave-up and ring modulator at certain settings and picking strengths. The pedal's circuitry utilizes two germanium diodes to square-clip the signal's sound wave, followed by full-wave rectification to create upper and lower octaves while compressing the signal.
The Uni-Fuzz is housed in a distinctive enclosure and is the first AC-powered fuzz pedal, eliminating fading problems usually attributed to battery-operated units. It features two control knobs - Balance (volume) and Expander (fuzz) - and a two-way Tone slide switch, which engages a controlling filter to scoop mids, creating a full-fat fuzz. The pedal does not have its own footswitch, functioning similarly to the Uni-Vibe, offering remote access with a small, doorstop-like footswitch.
The sound of the Uni-Fuzz is almost completely unique in the fuzz pantheon, with eccentric quirks built in, forcing players to write riffs that would sound uncouth with any other circuit. The pedal's design incorporates a differential pair of transistors to generate flavors without changing the feel of the device. The Uni-Fuzz is known for its spongy and unique tone, making it a positively unique and killer take on the favorite effect type of all time.
