The Department of Defense (DoD) recognizes the criticality of corrosion prevention and control (CPC) planning to acquisition program success. Corrosion is defined as the deterioration of a material or its properties due to a reaction of that material with its chemical environment. The CPC Source provides information on planning, design, sustainment, and workforce competencies, as well as corrosion science, paints, coatings, environmental severity classifications (ESC), and cathodic protection.
Corrosion can affect a vast array of physical assets, including buildings, wharves, airfields, pavements, and other facility categories. The CPC Source offers insights into planning, design, sustainment, and workforce competencies related to corrosion. It also provides specific facility category CPC information.
The Department of Defense (DoD) spends approximately $20 billion annually on maintenance due to corrosion, which accounts for almost 20% of every maintenance dollar. Therefore, CPC planning is essential from system inception to disposal, as it reduces the Total Ownership Cost and improves availability and safety.
The primary responsibility for the CPC Guidebook resides with the Office of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Materiel Readiness (Corrosion Policy and Oversight) within the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment. The guidebook assists the acquisition and sustainment workforce, and system procuring activities in developing and executing an effective CPC plan. It focuses on integrating CPC planning and execution early and throughout the acquisition process, resourcing the necessary funding and expertise, managing CPC risks, incorporating CPC language in procurement and contract documents, and monitoring CPC planning and execution throughout the acquisition process.
