The BOSS DD-2 Digital Delay pedal, introduced in December 1983, was the world's first commercial compact digital delay pedal. It features a custom integrated circuit (IC) derived from the flagship Roland SDE-3000 studio rack delay unit, utilizing 12-bit digital converters for a flat frequency response from 40Hz to 7kHz. The delay range spans from 12.5ms to 800ms, offering a wider range than analog circuits and clearer fidelity in the repeats. The pedal's circuit includes a 64-pin 'long chip' that processes the delayed signal to mimic the natural decay of echoes, resulting in a warm tone with minimal digital artifacts. The DD-2 is designed to retain a guitar-friendly tone and set the industry standard for delay effects, leading to the demise of analog delays for a period. The pedal shares visual similarities with modern BOSS pedals and has continued to influence the development of BOSS Digital Delay technology. The DD-2 is known for its extended delay range, providing clean and clear echoes, and is considered a milestone effect in the industry.
