The Firefly by JHS is a tribute to the Tonebender MKIII model of the late 60s, featuring a classic three-transistor Germanium fuzz circuit. The pedal includes four controls: Volume, EQ, Fuzz, and Bias. The Volume control acts as a master volume with significant headroom, allowing it to function as a boost. The EQ control operates as a cut, removing highs and fattening the tone as it is rotated to the right. The Fuzz control adds more distortion/fuzz to make the signal dirtier. The major addition to this classic circuit is the Bias control knob, which fine-tunes the power to the hand-matched germanium AC128 transistors inside, resulting in loud and powerful tones when rolled to the left and more dirty/saturated tones when rolled to the right. This control also helps overcome the issue of transistors sounding different in various temperatures and environments. The pedal also features internal voltage and polarity adjustments, allowing it to be powered on a normal 9V power supply.
The Firefly is designed for fans of classic fuzz and offers unique touch sensitivity, response, and rich tone characteristic of true Germanium fuzz. It is described as a powerful and versatile piece of gear that can cover a range of genres from blues to rock to heavy grinding distortion.
